A Question of Science!

12 March 2024

One of the Reception children at The Abbey asked their Mummy on the way to nursery, "What happens if you put blue tac in water?" The Reception room decided to do a little impromptu experiment to show the children what would happen!

Firstly, the children predicted what they think would happened. The ideas included:

  • "it will explode"
  • "it might turn the water blue"
  • "it might disappear"
  • "it will float".

The children then watched excitedly as Molly added the blue tac to see what would happen. They watched as it began to sink to the bottom of the jug , exclaiming, "Oh it's sinking, it must be too heavy to float like a boat". At the end of the activity a child pointed out the water was full to the top so how would they get the blue tac out? The children thought for a few minutes and gave the idea to use tweezers to grab it. We tried that and when it didn't work they suggested pouring out some of the water.

This simple spontaneous activity encouraged the children to think of ideas, make predictions, enhance language through discussions with their friends, and problem solve using trial and error. All created by a simple question in the morning!
